GUNS AND ROSARIES
The synopsis
GUNS AND ROSARIES--the darkly comedic story of a 17 year old boy who idolizes gangsters and the mob, and wonders what it’s like to be in “the life." When his infatuation swerves into reality, he (and his girlfriend) wish he had taken up a safer hobby.
The flick features, TONY MCDOWELL, 17, a hard-core mob aficionado who knows gangsters like baseball fans know their players. In an attempt to raise cash to so as he and his Mom can move out of their Ralph Kramden-like home, Tony takes over a bookie business from his Uncle Mel, despite a "You better not!" warning from his girlfriend, JAN OFFERMAN. At first, Tony does not realize that one of his clients is FATHER PETER, a priest and once a major hitman for the Godfather, WINKS SCARPINI, who is on trial for racketeering. Winks, who is super paranoid about being caught gabbing on a bug, has learned sign language to avoid incriminating himself. Father Peter is also a second father to the jailed and soon-to-be released, mentally unbalanced Junior Scarpini; son of Winks Scarpini. Father Peter gambles on football games to keep his church-sponsored homeless shelter financially afloat. When Peter loses his football bets to Tony, he goes back to what he knows best: strong-arming. However, he strong-arms and robs Winks' social clubs to keep his shelters financially solvent. To Junior's chagrin, his dad, Winks, orders Peter to be whacked. To Tony’s chagrin, Father Peter does not pay off his losing football bets to Tony but keeps the money for his homeless shelter. With Mel’s guidance, Tony goes to collect in church the gambling debt that Peter owes him. Tony is there when Peter is paid back in bullets for robbing his own Mafia, social club kind. Junior Scarpini, who enters the church after the murderous deed is done, mistakenly believes Tony killed Peter. However, Winks' underlings decide they can murder the psychopathic Junior, who they don't want as the new Godfather when his old man goes to jail for racketeering, and pin Junior’s death on Tony who was at the church. Tony thus becomes the target of the mob and his hero, Winks. The movie ends with Tony uncovering the power play. Winks violently takes care of the power players and allows Tony and Jan to live and prosper.
